In a long but enjoyable evening, 43 survivors of the 133 finalists who had

been

competing over the last 2 weeks, performed at the Academy of Music in

Philadelphia last night. Pavarotti chose 34 winners from the 43 who

performed.

I enjoyed all 43 performers, but IMHO, there should have been only 16

winners.

And 2 of those 16 were not chosen by Pav! As far as the specific interest on

the Brasilian performers, I will address that before posting the complete

list of  winners.

Lukas D' Oro, bass, Alpha de Oliveira, soprano, Angelica Feital, soprano,

Rosanna Lamosa, soprano, Marco Aurelio Zanini, Tenor, and Igor Vieira,

baritone, did not make it to the final 43. Marcos Paulo, tenor, 22, and

Juremir Vieira, tenor, 33, both sang and were among the 34 winners. A

very good showing for Brasil.

They were video taping for a documentary which I believe will be shown on

public TV, and maybe also released commercially, so hopefully, you may

be able to enjoy some of it later on.

There were 5 singers I thought were outstanding: Timothy Robert Blevins,

baritone, US, 31; Anna Shafajinskaia, soprano, Canada, 30; Hugh K. Smith,

tenor, US, 27; Maria Carla Izzo, soprano, Italy, 22; and Daniella Barcellona,

mezzo, Italy, 26. All 5 of these singers had great voices and wonderful

presence and performed incredibly well, but the best voice of the night

belonged to Izzo. Remember that name, we should be hearing of her in

the future. Pav agreed with me and all 5 were winners.

The remaining 27 winners were: Yi Ru Wang, soprano, 27, China; Alison

Buchanan, soprano, 27, Geat Britain; Jae Hong Im, tenor, 32, Korea;

Fabiana Andrea Bravo, soprano, 25, and Leonardo Lopez Linares,

baritone, 23, Argentina; Luis Damaso, tenor, 25, Spain; Milicent

Scarlett, soprano, 24, Canada; Anja Kampe, soprano, 27, Germany;

Nikola Mijailovic, baritone, 22, Yugoslavia; Valeriano Lanchas, bass,

19, Colombia; Gabriella Colecchia, mezzo, 22, Walter Fernando

Omaggio, tenor, 28, Simona Zambruno, soprano, 30, Serena Farnocchia,

soprano, 22, Monica Colonna, soprano, 25, Virna Sforza, soprano, 26,

Carlo Ventre, tenor, 26, and Fiorenza Cedolin, soprano, 29, all of Italy;

Amy Schroeder, soprano, 29, Johnny Maldonado, countertenor, 33,

Nina Edwards, soprano, 32, Ashley Howard Wilkinson, bass, 32,

David Sabella, countertenor, 30, Eric J. Owens, bass, 25, Jeffrey

Buchman, tenor, 27, Frank Hernandez, baritone, 25, and Melissa

Parks, mezzo, 26, all of the US.
